AI-Powered Garbage Collection Robot
Introduction
This AI-Powered Garbage Collection Robot is an autonomous system designed to modernize waste management in Singapore's HDBs. The robot navigates public housing estates to clean garbage chutes, collect refuse, and transport it to the central disposal area. It leverages an advanced AI vision system to interact intelligently and safely with its environment. This was a key project during my internship at the Temasek Polytechnic Robotics & Automation Centre (TPRAC).
Key Systems & My Contributions
- Mechanical Assembly & Integration: I was actively involved in the hands-on assembly of the prototype. This included selecting appropriate fasteners to secure the main chassis and assembling the vehicle's hub, which allows the robot to move and carry heavy loads. This foundational work ensured the robot was mechanically sound and ready for electronic integration.
- EPOS Controller Mount Design: The Maxon EPOS motor controllers, which are the brains behind the robot's movement, required a custom mounting platform. I designed this mount from scratch using Autodesk Fusion 360 to be secure, vibration-resistant, and accessible for maintenance. The 3D model was then fabricated from aluminum, providing a vital component for the robot's control system.
- AI Vision System Support: An autonomous robot is only as good as its ability to perceive the world. I directly supported the AI vision team by designing and 3D-printing physical models of chute doors and hinges. These models were used to train and test the AI's ability to identify and interact with real-world objects. I also assisted in testing the bin and human recognition algorithms to ensure safe navigation.
Project Outcome
My contributions helped advance the prototype from a concept to a functional test-bed. By successfully integrating the mechanical drivetrain with its electronic control system and supporting the development of its core AI features, the project moved significantly closer to its goal of creating a viable autonomous solution for waste management.
